The bezel shows signs of wear around the edge. The dial has developed a light patina and has a tiny black spot near eight o’clock. The caseback writing around the edge shows signs of wear and is still visible at an angle. There are some nicks on the nine o’clock side of the case, towards the edge. The markers on the sub-dials feature "lollipops" similar to those on Paul Newman dials. The dials on these watches were made by Singer, the same company that made the exotic or “Paul Newman” dials for Rolex. This example also only says “CHRONOGRAPH” on the dial at six o’clock Croton made many different dial variations of these watches and this one is quite attractive with less text. ![]() The current example features the seldom-seen maroon dial with black and red accents. These watches were super functional, and Croton would advertise that as a big selling point. These watches were also originally meant for land, sea, and air. These watches feature a rotating bezel, a tachymeter scale, as well as a telemeter scale on the dial. The original price of this model was $120 in the early 1970s. The current example is a Super-Chronomaster, which was an evolved version of the Chronomaster with more of a tonneau-shaped case. Arguably, the most recognizable Croton/Nivada is the Chronomaster. Croton was in partnership with the Swiss brand Nivada and many Nivada watches sold in the United States were branded Croton. In 1963 the company moved from NYC to Croton-on-Hudson, because they needed a larger office Croton-on-Hudson is a suburb of New York City in Westchester County. The Croton Watch Company was founded in 1878 by Jacob Horton in New York City. ![]() It has a beautiful maroon dial with contrasting white hands for easy legibility, all housed in a tonneau-style case that isn’t seen too often.
